SSMFS operates as a dedicated institution for the promotion and support of Women Self Help Groups (WSHGs) in rural Tamil Nadu. The organization was established to provide institutional support to the grassroots Self Help Group movement that began in 1995 through the efforts of Subiksha Rural Development Society and the leadership of Mr. S. Samynathan.
SSMFS is owned by five Mutual Benefit Trusts registered under the Indian Trust Act, all promoted by Subiksha Rural Development Society. These Trusts function as shareholders of SSMFS and serve as branch-level operating institutions that deliver credit and financial services to Women Self Help Groups in their respective operational areas.
The organization follows a community-based approach to financial inclusion, focusing on thrift and savings mobilization, mutual credit provision, SHG federation building, and livelihood finance. SSMFS maintains strong partnerships with formal banking institutions to ensure sustained credit linkage for member SHGs.
